Look into my eyes

What do you see when you look into my eyes?

My body has been scorned by the feverish landscape I inhabit. I am broken and split by the experiences I’ve had. Under all the superficial, are you able to see what is beating inside?

My chance in life is fading and I am growing weak. My body is left immobilized by its lack of courage. Under my frail skin, are you able to see what has been left to die?

I see a soft beam, glowing in the distance, becoming delicately faint. As I fight to overcome the obstacles I have been served, I am losing strength. In my waning moments, I cling to my failing senses. I feel your tight grip around my shoulders. I feel your panicked breath warming my face and filling my lungs. I feel the desperate caress of your gloved hand and I know.

Everything will be okay.

My heart sinks in my chest as I cannot convey that to you.

I cannot explain the reason for why it must end this way.

Or why the careless toss of a cigarette has brought us together under the falling ash.

You have tried your best but my time has come due.

As my body prepares for its departure, there is only one thing I can ask.

Look into my eyes and see.

Everything will be okay.

Even without the physical me.
